Anaerobic fermentation

A chemical process occurring within living organisms (e.g. yeast) during which the organism obtains energy from carbohydrates and sugars in the absence of oxygen. There are many anaerobic fermentation processes (e.g. alcoholic fermentation, anaerobic digestion) that produce useful products such as alcohol, biogas or biofuel.
