A closed surface, very often torus-shaped, on which a charged particle moves in a magnetically held plasma, e.g. in a tokamak or stellarator. On the magnetic surface lie magnetic field lines. In both tokamaks and stellarators, magnetic or flux surfaces take the form of nested toruses, somewhat crooked in the case of a stellarator. There are also magnetic surfaces in the shape of an interlaced knot.
