Interim storage

Location in the nuclear power plant facility area where the spent fuel is stored inside special casks. The advantage of storing spent fuel in the nuclear power plant area is the elimination of the transport of radioactive material off-site. The spent fuel, after being cooled in the spent fuel pool, is stored in special types of containers which are then further stored either under the roof or directly on the site. The spent fuel is stored here for the lifetime of the nuclear power plant and can be transported for reprocessing or for disposal in a final geological repository.
