Ion

An atom that has a different number of electrons than protons. An ion that has a positive charge is called a cation, and lacks some or all of its electrons. There is also a negative ion, called an anion, which has extra electrons. As a charged particle, the ion responds to magnetic and electric fields. Ions are formed by a process called ionization during collisions with particles, interactions with electromagnetic radiation, or chemical reactions.
