A reaction between nuclei of atoms that requires very high temperatures to occur. Typically, we speak of thermonuclear fusion because the fusion of nuclei of light atoms takes place at temperatures of millions of degrees. The equipment in which these reactions take place is also referred to as a thermonuclear; e.g., thermonuclear reactor.
