Nuclear (strong) force

Short-range force that holds protons and neutrons together in atomic nuclei and quarks together inside nucleons. It is also called strong interaction. A strong force acts at the range of only a few femtometres, but at this distance it is much stronger than the electromagnetic force, so the positively charged protons stay together in the nucleus.

The energy stored in the strong force acting between nucleons can be released by fission or fusion.
