Pressure energy

The pressure of the water in the hose causes the water to gush through the hole at a high velocity — pressure energy is converted into kinetic energy. (Source: © toa555 / stock.adobe.com)

Potential energy stored in an incompressible fluid, such as water, that is subject to external pressure, either from a mechanical device or gravity. When this fluid is released, e.g. by draining it from a reservoir, its pressure energy changes to kinetic energy and it can do useful work. The conversion of pressure energy into kinetic energy is used by hydroelectric power plants.
